  • Will researchers finally solve the mystery of IBS, Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Professor Magnus Simrén, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg and his co-workers have for many years made research in IBS, the second most common cause of sick leave in Sweden.

The research group is now involved in an international project in the Marie Curie research program. The project has been allotted SEK 30 millions to solve the mystery of IBS.

The research area is called neuro-gastro-enterology. Ten universities in Europe will each employ a young researcher from abroad, who will move between the different centers during hers or his graduate education.

From an interview in University of Gothenburg, e-nytt.se:

”There are no blood tests or other examination procedures that can secure a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the object of Magnus Simrén’s research. Instead, the focus is on patients’ descriptions of long-term diarrhea or constipation and abdominal pains.

I often explain that I have worked  focused on the individual for a long time, since long before focus on the individual became a concept in healthcare,” says newly appointed Professor Magnus Simrén who now collaborates with the Centre for Person-centered Care among others.”
