  • Should Zlatan be that good if he trained less than once a week?

The rhetorical question is asked by Professor Måns Rosén. The Swedish Government has named him to investigate and prescribe a plan for concentrating highly specialized surgery. The investigation will be presented in one year from now.

Swedish surgeons get too little training. Circa 25 Swedish hospitals carry out fewer than 10 kidney cancer operations per year. That is a far too small volume bearing in mind the complications.

    – In surgery there is a strong connection between volume and quality.

For example the world famous German Martini-Klinik (2 000 prostate cancer operations per year) reports only half as many complications as Swedish hospitals.

    – With the same operating volume in Sweden three prostate centers would be sufficient.

A majority of county council politicians are for a concentration, but many surgeons in small or middle sized hospitals are against the idea.
