Cancer is a unifying term for about 200 different diseases.
Oncology is the study of tumour diseases and the word originates in the Greek word for tumour. The five large cancer types in the western world are skin cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer and breast cancer. The five-year survival rate between the different types of cancer is very variable: between 99 per cent for certain types of skin cancer and 1 per cent for pancreatic cancer. The risk of developing cancer increases with age, infections, radon, sun exposure, and smoking. Even genetic factors are of importance.
