The skin, the largest organ of the body is our most important barrier against external threats.

Dermatology is the name for the study of this organ and its diseases. Historically dermatology is connected to venereology (the study of sexual diseases).   Researchers within dermatology and venereology are trying to elucidate the mechanisms of inherited skin diseases, psoriasis, allergies, auto-immunity, sweat diseases and the barrier function of the skin. A large and important branch of the study works with skin problems connected to specific work situations, such as nickel allergies among supermarket clerks.
